Another Adobe question - skipping

Has anyone using AA3 have problems with it "skipping" during recording? I swear, just about any recording I do will have a glitch or skip that I constantly have to go back and fix. It's on a new HP Pavillion laptop too with plenty of RAM to handle it.

Getting frustrated and possibly looking for a refund.

I use Camtasia Studio to record the Technical Instruction DVDs I do, so my experience with AA3 for recording is somewhat limited. After recording, I export the audio and process it in AA3, then import it back into Camtasia. If you're wondering, Camtasia is a screen capture video program. It is mostly used for recording PowerPoint presentations and other types of training.

However for recording with AA3, I have had the best results using the Audition 3.0 Windows Sound audio driver (set in the Audio Hardware Setup dialog). I have an E-MU 1616m interface and when I tried to use the E-MU ASIO driver (which is also in the AA3 driver list), I had problems. It may because I don't have something set up correctly. I am not that familiar with ASIO.

What driver are you currently using?

Honestly, I don't know what driver I'm using--I'll have to check on that.

I notice that when I record, the track view "scrolls along"--before when using Cool Edit, it didn't show the audio until you stopped recording. I'm wondering if that "scrolling" action takes up too much RAM and causes it to jump or skip like that. I don't know how to stop it from scrolling during recording, so I'll be messing around with that today while searching driver info.

In Audition, if you go to the Edit menu, select Audio Hardware Setup. A dialog box will open and on the Edit View tab, there is an Audio Driver list. Click the down arrow on the list and you will see the audio drivers that are available to you. As I said, I didn't have good results using the ASIO driver, so I use the Audition 3.0 Windows Sound driver. That works best for me. But you are running on a laptop, and your digital audio interface is probably different.

Down in the bottom of the dialog is the Edit View Ports. The default settings were fine for me.

I have seen some discussions on the web that say that ASIO is the best way to go. However, in my case it didn't seem that way. You may be different.

Ok, found it. Yeah, it seems like Windows sound driver worked the best, but still dealing with those occassional skips. I'm still working on preventing the track scroll during recording.

What is your latency setting? Too high or low? Also, scrolling live display of recorded wavefiles do take up a lot of processing power, as do having effects engaged while recording. I don't remember if one can from the times I've used AA, but with Cubase you can disable live scrolling.

There are so many tweaks to be made in a windoze laptop to get it to run nicely. Google away!

I'm slowly working my way around all of the settings/options. I did find the scroll option and it seems to have helped. I'll keep doing some tests on longer cuts and mess around with any latency settings.

I have had some issue with skipping, but not a lot. I get it when my scrolling feature was turned on (On the laptop). To turn it off go to "Edit" "Preferences" and under "General" make sure there is no check mark by the auto scroll.

sounds like you've got a buffering problem. In the hardware set up, go to the control panel and chose a higher buffering rate and it should work fine (I'm using the ASIO driver).

If you have wireless on your system, be sure to turn it off while using AA. I get the intermittent "skips" if I forget and leave it on. Turn that off, clean as a whistle.

Another tip: if you record on a laptop, having the touch pad active while recording can draw substantial processing resources. If you have a quick and easy way to shut it off temporarily while you're rolling, do so. This probably doesn't affect all laptops but it does on my HP Pavilion.

Has anyone seen this before? Out of the blue, I get this noise. I don't hear it while recording, but when I stop...Bang there it is.
I left it in record, and did the following:
I disconnected the mike cable, plugged it back in, disconnected at the other end, shut off the ON/off for the channel I'm using, turned the gain all the way off, then on again. Nothing seemed to change.
It's intermittent. It sounds like a thousand snakes hissing as loud as they can, ( real technical).

I've also had the burps that you were talking about, I've found that having to many things open seems to be the culprit.

I get pops and skipping when I have too many thumb drives or other USB devices in a hub I have attached to the computer. Problems seem to go away when I unplug unnecessary USB stuff.

I started getting those digital hiccups when I started using my M-Audio FastTrack Pro. Used to be random pops... now, when it happens, it happens with a definite pattern. I have found that if I open up something online like youtube and play arandom file for a few seconds, the clicks stop. Strange, huh?
