Lance -
Your computer is possessed by demons. Wasn't it you who got a change in audio quality by using a different FireWire interface? Yes, there is a difference in the two sentences. Can you explain how changes you make in the digital domain affect sounds generated in the analog domain? Pops and clicks I can understand, but frequency response?
Must be the flux field from the CD/DVD drive interacting with the 12AX7. Yeah, that must be it -- the flux field.

Well, everything on the CPU (at least this one) draws processing rescources from audio priorities. I remember reading that someone disabled their DVD and other media software on their computer as an audio fix, so since I couldn't do that I tried shutting down the drive as a quick fix. I've probably made about three dozen tweaks to this computer to get it to where it is now. Finally I have a portable rig I feel comfortable with.
Have you ever been in a weak older car and you start it up but then when you turn on the lights the revs fall? Yeah, it's analogous to that.

These last several posts allow me to bring the thread back to topic...because they represent just one of hundreds of reasons why I love my Macs (yes, plural) having switched from PC after 15 years of struggling with them. Endless incompatibilities between hardware devices and other hardware devices....between hardware and software....the forever "tweaking" one has to do just to be able to do basic functions, let alone complicated ones, conflicting IRQ's, incompatible drivers, 'safe mode' to analyze start-up issues, start-up applications that conflict, FAT problems, unending configuration problems and conflicts, file association problems, freezing, rebooting, reinstalling, viruses, spyware - need I go on? (I haven't scratched the surface.)
Yes, I know that NO computer system will be 100% perfect, including Macs....but I can tell you my stress level, since switching to Mac from PC, has gone down about 95% - and I'll take that anyday. And the learning curve was about, oh, a day.
It just works. Period.

Uhm... so telling you that I just finished having to go through and fix some Macs due to incompatibilities with the application the owner/user was trying to run (ProTools) would be a depressant to you...
Okay, I won't tell you.
Also won't mention some of the new nasties out there specifically targeting Macs.

Gawd, ProTools was a NIGHTMARE on the Mac when I used to work on it. Crashed all day long on all of our computers...at a large post house with a full time IT department. Greg's right that there's no simple solution. However, for simple home or laptop computers with not a ton of processing power I think a Mac is going to work better for audio recording that many other PCs of comparable specs with many recording programs - but there are no guarantees.
Thinking a Mac is error free is like thinking that a luxury car doesn't need oil changes.

Hey guys......I'm not trying to further embroil the "Mac vs. PC" debate....and I never said Macs were perfect. What I WAS careful to note was that my comments are based on MY personal experience. And I'm quite sure that as Macs take a larger piece of market share, they will become more of a virus target.
I also never said they were immune to problems - but again, based on my personal experience - I've had .01% of the problems with my Macs that I had with PC's. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Dave, nobody is turning this into a Mac/PC war.
just stating the facts. Each has it's intended audience and purpose. I wouldn't own a few of each if they were garbage.

Looking strictly at hardware, we see more Apple calls than Dell calls on campus on a percentage basis. We support about 5000 Dell PCs and about 800 Apple computers.
I own both a Mac and PCs.

That's interesting....because I was in my local computer repair shop, which is licensed to repair both PCs and Macs, and upon looking at their "to-do" shelf (those computers in line for the operating table) I saw NO Macs - and there were some 80 units there on last visit (I was there to have a RAM upgrade on my iMac.) I asked the guy at the desk, "What? No Macs to fix?" He replied that they seldom get Macs in for repair.
I own 3 Macs and no PC's...but owned nothing but PCs for 15 years.

My guess would be because Mac owners are far less likely to troubleshoot technical problems themselves. They buy them because they don't want to deal with problems. The other reason would be that most PC's hardware are user serviceable, whereas some Mac hardware is largely not, beyond RAM and harddrive upgrades. I am another long time (all my life) non-Mac user that switched in 2006 and have spent far few hours troubleshooting my hardware/software issues. Granted, I use my time installing way too much software that ends up bogging down the Mac's, so trouble usually finds me eventually anyhow. I also support both Mac and PC's as a studio consultant, and my Mac users tend to have fewer problems. As for Viruses, it is only a matter of time as Mac's market share grows that they become widespread. I haven't heard a report of one since 2006, but I just recently had to Restore my Powerbook 12" because mysterious things were happening, like couldn't run "disk utility", couldn't open a dmg file, Address Book wouldn't launch, etc... Virus? Maybe, maybe not...
